There are a few great ways of responding to compliments that I have learned over the years by observation...
-there's always the classic.."you too!" response. Which people use 85% of the time, but only mean it 3% of the time. If someone compliments you on what a great shirt you're wearing, do NOT say "you too" if they are wearing a heinous article of clothing. It's a lie and they know it. Use this response appropriately.
-One response that I use quite frequently when people compliment my clothes is responding with the location that I bought that article of clothing....for example:
"laura, I love you skirt!"
"I got it at Macys!"
I need to stop doing this so much. JUST SAY THANK YOU. they could care less where you got it. If they wanted to know where you got your skirt they would just ask. moving on..
-"Thanks so much!" is always a great way to respond to a compliment on your smile, body, clothes, a musical performance etc...just saying thank you is all you really need to do. Don't feel like you have to out-do that person's compliment with your response. They don't care.
-Some of the most awkward compliments I've ever received were after I would help lead worship at my church. People would come up to me after the service and tell me what a great job I did. I felt so wrong about it. I feel like I shouldn't be recognized when I'm leading worship, it's about God NOT about me. But anways...I would always make a really awkward face and say thanks in a shaky weird voice. But I'm beyond that now.
No one compliments me anymore so i dont have to worry about this.
